FACT CHECK.

The Japanese invasion of Indonesia, also known as the Dutch East Indies, occurred in 1941–1942 during World War II. The Japanese targeted the region for its oil resources, which would be vital during the war. The invasion was swift and complete, with the Japanese gaining control of parts of Sulawesi and Kalimantan by January 1942. They landed on Sumatra in February, and on Java on March 1, 1942.

The Japanese occupation of Indonesia had many consequences, including:

  • Indonesian independence movements: The Japanese occupation stimulated the development of Indonesian independence movements.

  • Forced labor: The Japanese forced millions of Indonesian men to work as slave laborers, known as romusha. Many were worked to death or summarily killed.

  • Medical experiments: The Japanese used 900 Indonesian men as human guinea pigs to test a vaccine for tetanus. All 900 died from acute tetanus within days.

  • Japanese indoctrination: The Japanese indoctrinated, trained, and armed many young Indonesians.

  • Political mobilization: The Japanese politicized Indonesians at the village level.

  • Indonesian nationalism: Local nationalists set up Merdeka Committees to welcome the Japanese as their “liberators”.

On August 17, 1945, after the news of the Japanese surrender was confirmed, Sukarno and Hatta proclaimed Indonesia an independent republic.
